Wooden Cask Brewing
The second craft brewery to open in Newport, Kentucky, Wooden Cask Brewing Company delivers an impressive line-up of traditional, easy-drinking beers.
Founded in 2016 by husband and wife team Randy and Karen Schiltz, Wooden Cask Brewing Company is located in a historic building in Newport, Kentucky where the focus is on brewing traditional, easy-drinking beers. The couple behind the brewery is particularly interested in making English, Irish and Scottish styles, which they believe many craft brewers have gotten away from. While they do have a small barrel-aged program and they hope to make a cider and nonalcoholic soda to round out the offerings, the mindset will always be about getting back to more traditional beers that many consumers can relate to.
Randy’s choice to focus on English-style beers also reflects his own taste and background: An English-style bitter is originally what got him interested in craft beer, and it was the first style he made when he started homebrewing some twenty years ago. Randy went on to co-found Rivertown Brewery with Jason Roeper in 2009, and then he sold his shares in the fall of 2014.
The 1887 building that Randy and Karen purchased for Wooden Cask Brewery has quite the background, and offers a unique history for the brewhouse. The building was once home to Jockey Club (a 1980’s punk rock bar), a bowling alley, and most recently, a Yellow Cab company. As the Schiltzs remodel, they plan to incorporate the building’s historical features, such as re-purposing wood from the six bowling lanes to be used for a bar and tabletops. The expansive 10,000 square foot space includes a barrel-aging area, a tap room, and plenty of lounge/game areas for brewery visitors. Randy’s goal is for the space to have a stripped-down English pub style.
We are happy to share Wooden Cask Brewing Co. with our Craft Beer Club members and hope you enjoy two of their offerings.
