A local success story of homebrewing friends who followed their dreams and continue to make history

Tri-City Brewing Company may have officially opened its doors in 2007, but the brewery can actually trace its history back to Father’s Day in 1995 when Kevin Peil received a home-brewing kit from his family. After a decade of experimenting and boiling in his garage, Peil and a handful of good friends, many of whom were also home brewers, developed a business plan and gathered a group of investors to open a brewery. Their dream became a reality when Tri-City Brewing Company was born in Bay City, Michigan and became the region’s first independent brewery in more than 50 years.

Tri-City Brewing takes its name from the three cities - Bay City, Saginaw, and Midland - located in the eastern part of the lower peninsula of Michigan (an area that was at one time quite the hub for brewing). These three cities are collectively known as the ‘Tri Cities.’ The brewery’s logo is a triangle of these cities, and it also closely resembles a Pontiac hood ornament, so it pays a little honor to the state’s automobile industry as well.

After establishing the brewery, Peil enrolled in a month-long intensive course at the Munich Brewing Academy in Germany to learn the art of brewing on a larger, more demanding scale. His background had been in chemical engineering, working at Dow Chemical Co. since 1990 - a position he still holds to this day. His time spent in Germany proved to be very helpful as he intricately studied the brewing process inside and out.

The brewery started with just three beers and 200 barrels produced its first year. Today, Tri-City brews over twenty beers and has recently completed a $1.75 million expansion where they moved out of the original warehouse and into their own brand new building. The new 10,000 square foot facility is about double the size of their original space and allows for plenty of room for crafting their award-winning ales. The brewery receives great support from local beer enthusiasts.

Head Brewer for Tri-City is Paul Popa who has been with the brewery since it was founded. His efforts and original recipes have resulted in countless awards for the Michigan craft brewery.

We are proud to feature the rapidly growing Tri-City Brewing Company and hope you enjoy the selections. Cheers!
