Sly Fox Brewing Company
One of the premier brewers in the Mid-Atlantic region crafts winning beers in cutting-edge style.
Sly Fox Brewing Company was founded in 1995 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania by the Giannopoulos family. Peter Giannopoulos had dreamed of one day opening a brewpub, and decided to go into business with his family to make that dream a reality. Peter began homebrewing in the early 1990’s, after a cousin had brought him a beer making kit and it didn’t take long for the hobby to become an obsession. Peter left his corporate sales job behind in 1994 to pursue a brewing career and in 1995, his mother found the perfect place to start a brewhouse.
Sly Fox Brewing Company was founded later that year and there was no looking back. The name ‘Sly Fox’ was chosen because of the area’s tradition of fox hunting. Starting out, Sly Fox was quite the ambitious family affair. Peter and his younger brother John became the managing partners and set out to become professional brewers. Their older brother Harry was put in charge of finance, and younger siblings Wendy and Glenn agreed to work at the pub. Various aunts and uncles lead helping hands as well.
In 2002, brewmaster Brian O’Reilly joined the Sly Fox team and helped grow the brewery’s distribution among Philadelphia’s top bars and taverns. With the added exposure, Sly Fox greatly expanded its customer base and demand was higher than ever. In 2004, the brewery opened a second location in nearby Royersford that included a 20-barrel production brewery and accompanying restaurant. Seven years later, demand once again made greater production capability a necessity and a new brewery (and headquarters) were built in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Sly Fox Brewing Company’s success has been due not only to the award-winning quality of its beers, but also to its forward-thinking business decisions. The company was an early adopter of the canned craft beer revolution and became the first brewery in the Mid-Atlantic region to put in a canning line in 2006.
The awarding of a Gold Medal to Sly Fox’s Pikeland Pils at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) marked the first time a GABF medal of any kind had been given to a canned craft beer. Sly Fox’s new cans are made with a 360-degree opening lid - offering ‘wide open flavor and aroma’ in a can that drinks like a glass. This concept is certainly unique and we applaud Sly Fox for, yet again, being on the cutting edge. Cheers!
