Rusty Rail Brewing Company
One of Pennsylvania’s finest craft breweries, Rusty Rail pays homage to Mifflinburg’s past while offering premium craft beer and delicious food in a totally unique atmosphere.
Founded in 2015 in the town of Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, Rusty Rail Brewing Company is a labor of love for brothers Paul and Eric John. They have completely renovated and re-purposed an enormous space (37,500 square foot) that was once a historical industrial center and turned it into a modern-day, state-of-the-art brew pub, breathing new life into downtown Mifflinburg. In its short lifespan, the brewery has already become a destination in Central Pennsylvania, offering an incredible brew pub experience unlike any other nearby.
The name of the brewery, by the way, pays homage to the railroad line that once ran through the town and provided a key part of the valley’s transportation network. Today, the railroad line has been turned into the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail, a 9.5 mile long scenic paved trail that is used for recreation - walking, running, and bicycling, and it goes right through Rusty Rail’s front yard.
The idea behind Rusty Rail Brewing Company started in 2009 when Paul and Eric John purchased the expansive Mifflinburg property and opened a family business, Legacy Crafted Cabinets, in the South building. The brothers are also the owners of the successful Ritz-Craft Homes, a world-class, multi-faceted enterprise that focuses on modular home manufacturing. With the South building being used as a cabinetry production facility, this left the North building open. After much contemplation, the concept of a brewery took flight. Eric was an avid homebrewer, and after touring many nearby microbreweries, the John brothers knew they could achieve something similar, if not better, in their Mifflinburg space.
The brewpub officially opened its doors in September of 2015 and visitors are still astounded by what lies inside. The first floor is the main dining area with a view of the 15 barrel brewing system, and a main stage for the brewery’s weekly concerts and musical guests. Outside is a large wooden deck known as the Beer Garden with Bavarian style picnic tables and a rustic fireplace. The second floor offers a game room, complete with pool tables, foosball, shuffleboard, darts, large screen TV’s, video game tables and a full service bar. The third floor is the banquet hall which is available for parties, community events and weddings of up to 300 people. Impressive is an understatement. What really takes the brewery space to the next level though, is the thoughtfully repurposed elements found throughout the building - from the rail spikes that comprise the door handles, to the half-inch thick pine doors, to the assembly line chains that support the staircase handrails. It is decorated with antiques too, including a pair of original wooden-bodied vehicles that were once made in this same building when it was home to Mifflinburg Body Company in 1928. The Rusty Rail Brewing Company has truly become an homage to an earlier era of American history.
While the brewery is certainly a sight to be seen, it’s the delicious, boldly brewed beers that really keep people coming back for more. Rusty Rail’s craft beers are made with an artisanal attention to small-batch brewing and they are only available within the state of Pennsylvania.
We are proud to feature Rusty Rail Brewing Company and celebrate the history of this Pennsylvania town. Cheers!
