A new division of the historic Millstream Brewing Co., Positive Friday focuses on feel-good, small-batch beers from the Amana Colonies of eastern Iowa.
Positive Friday is the new ‘alter-ego’ brand of Millstream Brewing Company in Amana, Iowa. The brewery just released this new lineup in 2021, but they’re off to a strong start specializing in clean, crisp, easy-to-drink, small-batch beers that remind you to sit back, kick up your feet, have a drink, and think about all the good things in life.
The idea behind Positive Friday sprouted from the Millstream owners’ idea to limit Fridays to a day of only good news - hence, Positive Fridays. The line up of beers (including Optimistic Monday, Lazy Sunday, Humpday Wednesday, and We Made It Saturday, among others) are made by an amazing team of up-and-coming brewers who work under the direction of Chris Priebe, a 30 year veteran and the unofficial ‘Dean’ of Iowa craft brewing. Chris is the head brewer for Millstream’s award-winning beers as well. The diverse, crowd-pleasing recipes behind Positive Friday’s brews include everything from a Blueberry Kölsch, a Vienna Style Lager, a Hazy IPA, a Wheat Ale, a Cream Ale, and more.
The brand ‘Positive Friday’ may be in its infancy, but its parent company, Millstream Brewing Co., is the oldest operational brewery in Iowa and one of the oldest operational breweries in the nation! Located in east central Iowa (closest city is Cedar Rapids to the northeast), Millstream Brewing Co. opened its doors in 1985. It became the first brewery to operate in Amana since 1884 when it began producing small batches of hand-brewed, German-style beer. Today, the award-winning brewery is crafting 16,000 barrels each year and is consistently recognized for its top-notch efforts.
Originally owned by Carroll F. Zuber and brothers James and Dennis Roemig, the brewery changed hands in 2021 and is now owned by Steve and Susan Charlier, along with Justin Cohamin - the masterminds behind Positive Friday as well. The team is committed to continually making quality brews, one batch at a time, while also introducing many different styles of beer to the brewery. With several awards garnered over the years, Millstream Brewing Co. crafts some of the finest beer from the Midwest.
The owners also operate a taproom which offers an authentic German Bierhalle experience, complete with German-inspired pub food and a large selection of Millstream and Positive Friday brews on tap. To customers, the Bierhalle feels as though you are visiting a place in the Old Country. Showing its passion for the local community and historic Amana Colonies, the Brau Haus displays local treasures and celebrates the historic German community of Amana. The Beer Hall is located next to the brewery on the banks of the Mill Race Canal, a manmade waterway that flows into the Iowa River.
The Millstream and Positive Friday group plans to continue expanding their lineup of handcrafted beers in the upcoming years that will enhance the company’s already illustrious reputation. We hope our Craft Beer Club members enjoy two of Positive Friday’s customer favorites - Optimistic Monday and Lazy Sunday. Cheers!
