Port City Brewing Company
An award-winning brewery offers an exciting lineup of world-class quality brews.
City Brewing Company is an award-winning craft brewery serving the D.C. and Mid-Atlantic area. The brewery is located in Alexandria, Virginia, which has a proud tradition of brewing beer since 1866, when the Robert Portner Brewing Company began its fifty-year history, eventually growing to be the largest brewery in the southern United States before Prohibition ultimately forced it out of business. Port City Brewing is proud to revive, celebrate, and continue this rich brewing history with a modern, artisanal approach, located just outside of our Nation’s Capital.
Bill and Karen Butcher opened Port City Brewing Company because they felt that the DC area needed more choices for great quality, locally produced craft beer - and they were right. Port City is committed to producing world-class quality beers without compromise and they are now the oldest packing brewery in metropolitan Washington, D.C. They currently offer a line-up of year round beers, as well as a slate of seasonal, occasional, and specialty beers, each with a unique twist. Each of the beers uphold the Port City mission which is to be reliable and innovative through well-balanced beers that celebrate their raw ingredients.
All of the Port City beers are available for tasting at the brewery taproom, a state-of-the-art artisanal facility located in historic Alexandria, Virginia, just a couple of miles west of Old Town.
Over the years, Port City Brewing Company has garnered several impressive awards for their premium craft beers, plus plenty of prestigious honors for the brewery as well. In 2015, Port City was named the Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival, and in 2019 they earned the Dream Big Awards - Green/Sustainable Achievement Award from the US Chamber of Commerce for their success as a sustainably-focused business.
We are happy to offer these award-winning Port City beers to our Craft Beer Club members. Port City Brewing Company is proud of the hand-crafted beers they brew and they are equally excited to share them with you. Cheers!

1. What is a Hopzooka?
The Hopzooka, AKA the MVP at Port City Brewing Company, is a patent-pending dry hop vessel that was created by Head Brewer Jonathan Reeves. Jonathan was looking for a way to reduce oxygen pickup in his fermenting beer, so he started tinkering, and after lots of experimentation and refinement, he developed the Hopzooka. This special dry hop vessel adds hops to fermenting beer without adding any oxygen to the brew. The result is a better beer with fresher, longer-lasting hop character.
2. What is an all-grain beer?
An all-grain beer is a beer made entirely from malted grains, as opposed to beers made from malt extract.
