Matt Brewing Company
Originally founded in 1888 by German-born immigrant Francis Xavier Matt, the Matt Brewing Company has earned its reputation as one of the countryâ€™s most respected brewers of specialty beers. Today, the brewery is run by the third (Nick) and fourth (Fred) generations of the Matt family, staying true to their German heritage and still crafting beer to the exacting standards set forth by their family over a century ago.
Francis Xavier Matt, or â€œF.X.â€ as heâ€™s known, had spent many years working at the famous Duke of Baden Brewery in the Black Forest region of Germany before coming to the United States in 1885. He dreamed of owning his own brewery and after several years, finally organized the West End Brewing Company in 1888. The brewery was later renamed the Matt Brewing Company and became one of the most successful breweries in Utica, New York.
Today, Matt Brewing Company is still located in Utica, New York, at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The Adirondack Park is by far the largest state park in the country, and a beautiful region of pristine wilderness and breathtaking landscape for nearly 6 million acres! In the heart of the Adirondacks is Saranac Lake, after which the Matt family named its flagship line of beers. Saranac beers truly capture the spirit of this unique region, crafted with the pure water that flows from its mountains and the grains the grow in its soil.
At the Matt Brewing Company, Nick Matt serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, while his nephew, Fred Matt, is President and Chief Operating Officer. They both joined the brewery full time in 1989 and have worked closely to guide the development of the Saranac brand, add more year-round brews, and create a line of seasonals and specialty products. They are both deeply passionate about Saranac beers, and dedicated to upholding the Matt family tradition.
