Iowa Brewing Company
Cedar Rapid’s newest craft brewery is truly creating a beer for everyone, brewing a variety of beers for every palate and earning some well-deserved hype in the process.
In 2008, the Cedar River overflowed its banks in a tragic flood that destroyed many businesses in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Among the lost businesses was Iowa Midland Supply, which was owned by brothers Brian and Craig Stephan. Wondering what to do with their former industrial space, the Stephans’ friend Matthew Wolf suggested a brewery and the trio teamed up to make Iowa Brewing Company a reality. They spent years coming up with a business plan, raising funds, and renovating the space, and finally, in 2016, Iowa Brewing Company opened its doors to debut a state-of-the-art brewery and taproom - adding to Cedar Rapids’ burgeoning brewery scene.
Head Brewer Mike Wing joined the Iowa Brewing Company as well, bringing with him plenty of brewing and production experience from Backpocket Brewing Company in Coralville. Mike started as a home brewer and over his career, he has grown to favor traditional English and German style beers - but he also sees the importance of brewing currently popular brews like hoppy beers and sours. He enjoys keeping a balance between tradition and modern, and he brings that style to Iowa Brewing Company. Working with the Stephans brothers and Matthew Wolf, Mike Wing crafts a wide variety of lagers, ales, and porters, plus a series of small batch IPA’s, sours, and barrel-aged brews.
The very industrial-looking taproom at Iowa Brewing Company is meant to evoke a basement with its concrete floors, leather couches, brick, and exposed duct work, offering a casual and inviting setting for enjoying the range of crowd-pleasing craft beers.
Iowa Brewing Company is not alone in Cedar Rapids, with nearby breweries including Turner Alley, Quarter Barrel, Lion Bridge and Third Base all operating nearby. The owners see the other breweries as a boon, not competition, as they help to build up local interest in craft beer and bring in beer lovers and tourists to the area. It’s clear that the community of craft brewers in Cedar Rapids is tight, which is always nice to see.
We are proud to feature this newcomer to the Cedar Rapids brewing scene, and offer two of their most popular selections to our Craft Beer Club members.
