Evil Genius Beer Company
An innovative rising star brewery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
What started out as a dream that many college guys have, became a reality for friends Luke Bowen and Trevor Hayward. The two buddies met while attending Villanova University and when the financial crisis of 2008 hit, they were forced to strategically consider their bleak career opportunities. Rather than fight for employment during a recession, they decided to instead craft a business of their own, a brewing company. In 2010, with the help of their families and the guidance of brewer Mark Braunwarth, Evil Genius Beer Company opened its doors.
Since the beginning, Luke and Trevor have been working to create great beer as well as a strong brand - focusing on innovative packages, branding, and marketing tactics. The name of the beers are inspired by 90’s pop culture (for instance, ‘Stacy’s Mom IPA’ is named after Fountains of Wayne’s hit by the same name, and ‘Purple Monkey Dishwasher’ was a phrase used on an episode of ‘The Simpsons’ television show). Each beer is made in limited production with fresh, local ingredients to create the most flavorful, sessionable brews possible.
After moving locations briefly from Indiana, to New York, and Connecticut, the successful brewing company has decided to finally settle in Pennsylvania, in the heart of the South Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. Founders Luke and Trevor brought on Head Brewer Jon Defibaugh in 2013 to help design the brand new brewery that is due to open in the fourth quarter of 2016. The new space has a historical industrial feel, an ambiance the trio wants to embrace and modernize to enhance the overall experience and functionality of the brewery. There are plans to open a very large tasting room/beer hall, a small restaurant with food supplied by rotating food trucks, and a beer garden on the neighboring lot.
Jon Defibaugh, a rising star in Philly’s craft beer scene, will also stay on as Evil Genius’ Head Brewer once the new brewery site opens. The plan is to continue brewing the larger batches at Evil Genius’ current Hartford, Connecticut location, while the new Kensington location will feature brews only available on the premises (draft only, exclusive beer). After homebrewing for many years, Jon Defibaugh started his professional career at Earth Bread + Brewery in Mt. Airy and worked under Tom Baker. He also gained experience at Tired Hands Brewing Company in Ardmore before starting with Evil Genius. His innovative and passionate spirit has proven to be a perfect fit for the Evil Genius brewing team.
We hope you enjoy these two special selections from Evil Genius Beer Company. Cheers!
