Honoring the historic German town of Boerne, Texas, Boerne Brewery crafts a boutique collection of ales celebrating the area’s German roots, but with a Texas twist.
Located in Boerne (pronounced Bur-nee), a Texas Hill Country town northwest of San Antonio, Boerne Brewery was founded by husband and wife team Fred and Jennifer Hernandez in 2011. For a town that is rich in German history, Boerne was missing one very important element - a brewery! That all changed when Boerne Brewery became a reality, crafting locally inspired beers that the residents of the Texas Hill Country could be proud of.
The journey began when Jennifer Hernandez gifted her husband a Mr. Beer homebrewing kit. That first batch may not have turned out very well, but the brewing process inspired Fred to keep at it and tweak his recipe. He was hooked. Homebrewing became an avid hobby of Fred’s, and after taking over the kitchen and garage with his brewing equipment, it became clear to Jennifer that he not only needed to pursue this newfound passion - but he needed the space to do it!
It was Jennifer who found the location of today’s Boerne Brewery, a 6,000 square foot warehouse space and tasting room. There was an old homestead on the property that was not in any shape to serve as a brewery, but the couple used many of the old building materials in different aspects around the brewery. They also found several ‘buried treasures’ on the property, including license plates, Sinclair gas station signs and tools that they have put up for display in the new building as a way to honor their local roots.
Renovations on the space began in 2011, but brewing did not start until 2013 with the production of just four core beers: a German Kölsch, an English ESB, an American IPA, and an English Old Ale. In addition to the beers all being named after local influences, local artists created the artwork for Boerne Brewery’s labels as well. Fred and Jennifer began distributing their beers to local restaurants and liquor stores the following year.
Since opening their doors, the beers of Boerne Brewery have proven to be a hit among both locals and tourists. The couple works tirelessly to brew high quality ales made from the finest ingredients, and the town of Boerne has completely embraced this local treasure.
We are happy to share a duo of Boerne beers with our Craft Beer Club members. Cheers!
