Blue Blood Brewing Company
A team of retired Lincoln, Nebraska police officers create a hugely successful craft brewery honoring those who serve and protect
Founded in December 2011 by three buddies from the Lincoln, Nebraska Police Department, Blue Blood Brewing Company honors their tradition in law enforcement with a distinctive ‘cops and robbers’ themed beer list and a community driven spirit. Since opening its doors, the local support has been incredible, allowing the brewery to continue growing and expanding production at an alarming rate. Today, Blue Blood is among the most popular and well-established craft breweries in the state of Nebraska.
President and co-founder Brian Podwinski began working for the Lincoln Police Department in 2000, but was injured in a training accident that forced him to retire early in 2006. He then decided to hone in on his passion for homebrewing beer and with the support of his friends, family, and a team of investors, poured his heart and soul into establishing Blue Blood Brewing Company.
In May of 2016, Blue Blood Brewing Company moved to its new 12,000 square foot brewery and taproom which sits above Robber’s Cave, a 5,000 square foot maze of sandstone cave tunnels, the majority of which was created as layering caverns in 1869 by Lincoln’s first brewery, Pioneer Brewing Company. Legend has it that the caves have also been used as a hideout for Jesse James, a sacred temple for Pawnee Indians, and even the site of an Old West-style duel. The brewery’s new location on this Nebraska landmark certainly adds some appeal and intrigue to visitors who enjoy the guided tours from Blue Blood’s brewpub and taproom.
The Blue Blood team is excited about their new brewery location and its ability to host and attract more visitors with its full menu brewpub and taproom (with over a dozen beers on tap). Plans are already in the works to add an outdoor beer garden with a stage for live music and beer production should be expanding by nearly 1,000 barrels in the near future. Business is certainly booming!
The success of Blue Blood Brewing Company is largely due to its distinctive line up of award-winning beers that are made with the finest American ingredients, including some fantastic hops grown right in Nebraska. The beers are made to fit within one of the four brewing series, appropriately named Usual Suspects (main line of beers produced year round), 10-Series (a higher alcohol line of beers named after the old 10 codes used by police officers in radio communication), Outlaw Series (a barrel aged program of small batch, limited run beers), and Robber’s Cave Series (experimental varieties to honor Blue Blood’s landmark location).
We hope you enjoy these two selections from Blue Blood Brewing Company!
