In light of 2020, we’d like to present 5 New Year’s Resolutions for Beer Lovers! Now, if you’re interested in becoming a self-proclaimed beer nerd (in the best way possible, of course), we’ve come up with ways to make your wish come true. Congratulations, you’re on your way to finally fulfilling a New Year’s Resolution! If you’re not that into beer yet, don’t worry because these resolutions are worthy of anyone’s list.
Now, if you’re the type to dive into the books and study up, then by all means, do your thing. But if you’re unsure about where to start we’ve outlined a few key aspects that will not only boost your brew knowledge, but also get the attention of those around you and get you set up for a successful Brew Year (pun intended). Are you ready?
1: Start Drinking More Beer Styles
Whether you’re a seasoned beer tasting pro or just dipping your toes into the world of craft beer, there’s always room to try more beer styles. Yes, we’re saying you should drink more craft beer! Not only will this help you recognize the subtleties between the beer styles themselves, but you’ll also come to notice each brewery has its own flare, meaning an IPA from one brewery could have a completely unique taste compared to an IPA from somewhere else.
Have you mastered step one? Great, on to the next one on tap!
2: Invest In Proper Glassware
While some may say the glassware shouldn't matter if it’s a great beer...are right to an extent. Sure, a beer will taste good to the average person, but remember you’re not average. You’re here to become the next beer expert! No time for slacking off - start with the glassware for styles you love and grow your collection as your palate and taste preferences broaden. See our post on What You Should Know About Beer Glasses to get the full rundown. A trusty beer opener is always a plus too.
3: Learn Brew Terms
There’s no better way to announce “I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT” than if you mispronounce or use the wrong beer terminology with true beer fanatics. But don’t worry, it’s an easy fix and you’ll be talking about ABV’s, IBU’s, Hop Varieties, and more like nobody’s business! Reading the labels on your brews as you drink them is a great way to commit the basics to memory, but the best way is to do a bit of research and light reading about brew styles and brewing or search for some helpful videos. You can even begin by asking questions when visiting your local breweries. But we prefer the “learn by drinking”, I mean, “learn by doing” method...
4: Get Involved
An awesome way to become more versed in the craft beer domain is to get involved! Partake in local brewery trivia nights and various events, sign up for Beer Connoisseur’s e-magazine to stay up to date on beer happenings (this is included as one of the free Bonus Gifts if you sign up for the Craft Beer Club!) recruit some friends to come along on your journey, or even dabble in some home-brewing yourself. All are great options and the world is your brew kettle, so decide what lines up with your beer goals and start small or jump all the way in!
5: Join The Best Craft Beer Of The Month Club
The final step to becoming a certified ‘Beer Connoisseur’ is excitedly waiting for your monthly box of craft beer to arrive from the Best Beer of the Month Club...aka The Original Craft Beer Club! Sure, it’s one thing to simply enjoy the beer, but not you...oh no. You’ll be the one to scour the monthly newsletters included in each shipment to learn the brewery’s story by heart and take the beer tasting notes into consideration before, during and after each sip of your exceptional brews from around the country. Yes Sir/Ma’am! You’re the one who will keep those newsletters after each month just to test your Beer Trivia knowledge and become the go-to person for all of your friend’s beer related questions. Yep, that will be the new and improved 2020 version of yourself and guess what, we’ll help you get there one month at a time.
Joining the Craft Beer Club will let you revel in small-production craft beer at its finest. Spread the word, frolic in the hop fields, make snow angels in your barley and above all, drink more craft beer! At the end of the day, how else will you master the ins and outs of it all? We’re not saying drink all the world’s beer in a day, but you know what we mean - taste, taste, taste. And then taste some more and you’ll be an expert in no time.
